How to Help

Helping ornate box turtles is as simple as watching for turtle crossing signs, driving cautiously, and helping them cross the road when needed. Below is a guide on how to do this and organizations to donate to and learn more about.

The Wisconsin Turtle Conservation Program (WTCP) is a turtle monitoring program designated to the analysis of the statewide population dispersion of turtles as well as the collection of data on their mortality near places of infrastructure. From late May to early July in Wisconsin, female turtles leave wetlands to lay their eggs in upland nesting areas. Due to urbanization and roads, female turtles often have to cross these roads to lay their eggs (Redder, A., Dodd, C., & Keinath, D. 2006). This increases their mortality rate because of the increase in potential automobile and human interaction. WTCP instructs that if you see a turtle crossing the road, pull over and help the turtle cross in the direction it was traveling. Then, report the turtle road crossing sighting to the WTCP. Volunteers can access an online system of reporting and can document sightings and nesting sights as well as upload pictures. With this information, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources establishes a database where they can monitor and conserve turtle species effectively and efficiently by identifying problem areas conservation can be focused on. Conservation efforts implemented by this data include turtle road crossing signs and underpasses.

In addition, the DNR instructs citizens to keep in mind protective actions. These include building nest cages to protect turtle eggs on your property; driving with caution near wetlands, lakes, and rivers; reporting observations, road crossings, and nest sights to the DNR; and watching for turtle crossing signs.
